Rabid Raccoon Found In Neighborhood
The Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) confirmed that a raccoon located near Blossom Street and Poinsettia Street in Columbia, SC tested positive for rabies.
One person was potentially exposed and was refereed to their healthcare provider. The raccoon was submitted to DHEC’s laboratory for testing on September 3 and was confirmed to have rabies on September 4.
If you are going to feed your pets outdoors, the recommendation is to feed at certain times each day and remove any uneaten food promptly. Unsecured bags or containers of pet food, trash and garbage that contains food scraps, and open compost piles or compost containers will attract wildlife.
